The Gold Coast gets its rain in bursts rather than drizzle, and a stormwater system that copes fine for eleven months of the year can be comprehensively overwhelmed in a February downpour. Flat ground makes it worse — large parts of Carrara, Labrador and Varsity Lakes have very little natural fall, so water that isn't actively directed away simply sits. On the sewer side, the pre-1980 suburbs still have earthenware lines with rubber-ring joints that mature tree roots treat as an open invitation, and sandy coastal soils around Burleigh and Labrador let fine material migrate into any pipe that's already cracked.
